Use Case 4 HTTP Error 500: Webshop not available

About the client
An event organizer asked us to test their site with our basic setup. On the client's website it is possible to buy event tickets and merchandise from artists.

What happened?

The customer's merchandise store linked via the main navigation was not accessible. In fact, in this case there was an error code 500. If HTTP Error 500 is displayed in the browser, it means there was a problem communicating with the server. However, users cannot see where the error is, which only makes it possible to leave the page. In long term, such an error is harmful because the bounce rate of users increases, which means negative consequences for SEO search engine optimization. In addition, every user without access to the store means lost revenue potential for the website owner.

How could such a mistake happen?
HTTP Error 500 is an internal server error. It can be caused by syntax or character errors in the .htaccess file, faulty scripts, limited server-side resources, exceeded response times, server maintenance, or incompatible plugins, themes, and extensions.

How difficult was the testing for the TESTIFY team?
The basic setup of TESTIFY had already identified the error after a few minutes. The customer first had to put his store into service mode, as the error could not be fixed so easily. The failure to identify the error in time could, in the worst case, have resulted in the page being excluded from the Google search index. More information on this topic can be found in this SEO technical article.
